Well, maybe for Shakespeare. But, Shakespeare never sold legal services. Combined with aesthetic design, your web site multimedia design copy turns precious first seconds into lasting, loyal customers. With 800 million pages on the World Wide Web, according to NEC Research Institute, writing effective web site copy is crucial to your online success. Follow this twelve-step program and your writing will improve tremendously.

1. But, We Don't Even Know Each Other: The time spent on prewriting, research, and brainstorming reduces wasteful wheel spinning. When writing web site copy, first determine the demographics of your customer base. How old are they? Are they knowledgeable or unversed about your industry? What day-to-day pressures do they face? Brainstorming builds the foundation of your online message and helps you develop a targeted and persuasive writing style.

2. What Have You Done For Me Lately? Determine what attracted your visitor to your web site. Visitors typically come to learn how you can help them with an issue they have. Consider the following questions - what can you do for your customer? How can you remedy a process or situation for them? How can you solve their dilemma? If they purchase from you, what's their ROI? Address all concerns proactively. If your viewer doesn't find the answers they need, they'll find a competitor who has them. Resolve the issues that brought your visitor to your web site and you'll convert your viewer into your customer.

3. Hide And Seek: State your purpose immediately. This is easy. Just explain what you do, your products, services, and solutions. Make it easy with no digging required. Similarly, communicate the main topic on supporting pages right away.

6. Bye, Bye, Bye: Once your preliminary draft is developed, put your copy down for a while, even days, and work on something else. If ideas come to you between edits, jot them down. Then, come back in a few hours or days to edit and re-edit, omitting unnecessary words. As critical as you think the word 'very' is, your viewer will likely to disagree.

7. Cut The Flowers: Check your sentence and keep it concise. Using subject-verb format assures your most powerful message delivery. People often try to flower their words with adjectives and prepositions, loosing sight of what their main subject actually is. If you can't find your subject and verb, your reader won't be able to either.

8. 'Of' Is Your Foe: 'Of' gives a nice rhythm to your writing, but is more often than not unnecessary. Delete it. For instance, the sentence 'John likes a coffee overdose at the start of the day' sounds clearer as, 'John likes a coffee overdoes at the day's start.'

9. Equality: Review your lists. When building a list of ideas, keep your phrasing parallel. Use either all single words, plural words, phrases or clauses. For instance, the sentence 'Joey laughs with cows, sings with girls, and figure skates,' misses this parallel momentum. Yet, 'Joey laughs with clowns, sings with girls, and plays with butterflies,' includes three present-tense verbs and a plural object. Check consistency with both tense and structure.

10. Fill Your Glass: Maintain a positive outlook. Your customer prefers their glass half full. Do only 10 percent of your patrons switch service, or does your restaurant satisfy 90 percent of its patrons?

11. Uh, Say What? Include plenty of details for readers who may not be familiar with your industry. Avoid jargon or tech talk. Use common terms so you don't intimidate your reader. Your goal is in making your reader feel comfortable and confident, not patronized.

12. How Does That Make You Feel? Finally, appealing to your readers' emotions. Your web site alone will need to sell your product or service. Perhaps this is the appeal of online shopping. Sales clerks don't lurk around every corner waiting to hound you. Since you're not there to personally convince your potential customer, use your copy to do this. The biggest mistake a salesperson makes is forgetting to ask for the sale. Ask.

Pre-write, free-write, and edit your web site copy. With a bit of preparation, clear direction, consistent focus, and repeated editing, you can convert visitors into long-term, loyal customers.
